As I mentioned a few days ago, it is apple season in Southwest Iowa. We have an orchard behind our house. It’s home to mulberry trees, a cherry tree, peach tree, a strawberry patch and of course, apple trees. As if that isn’t enough to keep me busy, we have numerous wild plum trees on our farm. Those beauties have been harvested for plum jelly, my favorite!
Freezer Apple Pie Filling
Apple Pie Filling is great to have on hand for those mid-winter cravings for a warm comforting apple dessert. It's so versatile as you can also use it to make apple crisp, apple cobbler, hand pies or simply as cooked apples.
Ingredients
- 5 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon.
- As you prepare the apples, add them to the sugar mixture, stirring periodically to keep the apples from turning brown. The natural juices of the apples will create a beautiful caramel color sauce.
- Place the apples and sauce in a gallon resealable bag and place it in the freezer.
- This recipe will make one apple pie or other desserts of your choosing.
- Thaw completely when ready to use in your favorite recipe.
