How cute are these Frosted Thumbprint Cookies?! Great for any holiday, birthday, or party. Simply coordinate the frosting or colored sugar sprinkles for the occasion. 🙂
These cookies!!! They just make me smile. 🙂 With Valentine’s Day coming up this weekend, I knew I had to make Frosted Thumbprint Cookies with pink frosting and they turned out perfect. If you love frosting as much as I do, you need to make Sugar Cookie Hearts with Buttercream Frosting too. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Have you ever made thumbprint cookies? There are many variations. They are a dainty, buttery Swedish cookie traditionally filled with jelly. The favorite in my family is to fill them with frosting. I’m not gonna argue with that, LOL.
I have fond memories of making Frosted Thumbprint Cookies during family baking days at Christmastime. In the past, I never made them any other time of the year. I really have no idea why. So, starting now in 2021, I am going to step out of my box and make all the yummy treats any time of the year!
Basic Ingredients:
- Brown sugar
- Butter
- Eggs
- Vanilla
- All-purpose flour
- Salt
- Frosting, colored sugar sprinkles, or cinnamon/sugar mixture
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the brown sugar, butter, egg yolks (set aside the egg whites), and vanilla.
- Add flour and salt. Mixing until well combined.
- Beat egg whites.
- Roll a tsp of dough into a ball then roll in the beaten egg whites and the chopped nuts. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. *If you prefer sugar rather than nuts, omit the egg white step*.
- Press your thumb into each cookie ball, creating a small indentation.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes and remove to a cooling rack.
- While the cookies are cooling, mix the buttercream frosting ingredients until well combined. Add food coloring if desired and mix well.
- Place a small amount of the buttercream frosting in each cookie thumbprint.
Note:
In the picture above, you will see some of the variations that can be used for the Frosted Thumbprint Cookies. In order from left to right, rolled in cinnamon/sugar with pink frosting, rolled in pink sugar sprinkles with white frosting, rolled in nuts with pink frosting, and rolled in cinnamon/sugar with white frosting. With St. Patrick’s Day next month, wouldn’t these be adorable rolled in green sugar sprinkles with green frosting? FYI…Walmart (Great Value brand) has some neon gel food coloring that is perfect for Easter too. 🙂
Take a moment and visualize with me…Frosted Thumbprint Cookies in a gift box with a candle, heart shaped candies, gift card, and/or a special note for your Valentine. I’m giddy just thinking about it!
Whatever your plans, I wish you a week full of sweet treats and a very special Valentine’s Day.
Until next time…Cheers!

Colored sugar or cinnamon-sugar are great options to roll the cookies in if you don't care for nuts.
Traditional thumbprint cookies are filled with jelly so that is an option as well.
